Well, cut my shirt tails...again.
Well guys, its official. I suck as a turkey hunter. I proved it once again this morning.
Heres the sad, sad story.
Got up about 15 after 5, got dressed, and headed to the farm (girlfriend dads). got there about 5:30 or so. Grabbed my gear and went to a a spot in the back of the pasture that contained a lot of turkey sign. (duh!) I had previously scouted this spot and decided there had to be at least 1 turkey around.
I get all set-up in the blind, and I wait for some cattle to move on over to the next hillside before I get the decoys set out. I set the decoys out about 6:45 and settle into the blind, nearly drifiting back off to sleep. With my set-up I had three sides of the blinds open and the back side closed. 7 am I hear a faint gobble coming from behind my set-up. so I purr a little, and get a quick response but still faint and I THINK fairly far off in the distance. about 5 minutes later I started a series of yelps and this time hes only about 70 yards behind me! At this point I figured he had already saw my decoys and was commited to come in. I did no more calling from here out. 10 minutes later I peep over into the ravine about 30 yards from me and I see him in full strut staring at my decoys! He let off one short gobble and started to head towards the jake decoy I had set out, drumming the whole way over. at this point I'm slowly raising my gun. By the time hes in sight I got a bead right on Toms head. Just before he made it to the decoy, I shot! Missed. Shot again. Missed again.
I should have let him put on a show and come out of strut before I shot. But I think today I let my nerves get the best of me. He had every bit of a 10" beard.

That is sad! ...you're a terrible shot.
Pattern your load on something. If you dont have paper to shoot, pick a knot on a tree. I assume you're using a shotgun with #4-#5 turkey loads. If you're using a BB gun, I apologize. Eitherway, that sucks...fun to get a shot but haunting to miss. ...drink to get drunk asap

yes I patterned to the gun.
the only thing I can figure is that it was just toooo close of a shot. Gun shot awesome at 30 and 40, never even thought about shooting it at 10 and 15.

Well, you patterned your gun and its on so I guess it has something to do with the part I quoted in your sad story. Sounds like you rushed the shot/shots(you missed twice ). I havent killed a ton of birds but im never in a big hurry to shoot unless the bird perks up like somethings wrong. With the shotgun, when im ready to kill the bird and he's in fullstrut, I make a little putt noise to stop him and make him stretch his neck out all pretty for ya...then BAM, beak in the dirt! Give that a try, dont rush your shot, and suck less!

Well, the good news is that you were only turkey hunting. It's not like you were hunting for something good like deer or waterfowl. It's just a shame that the ugly bird is still walking around loose through the timber ruining the scenery.

only turkey hunting. what dang sport of skill does it take to sit in a tree stand all day hoping upon hope that some brown four legged vegetarian walks in front of your arrow. Now trading love notes with a gobbler winning the war against a hot hen now that shows your manhood.
