OK Stephen, this ones for you. If I decide to go with a new desk top, which Mac do you recommend? I want at least 2-3gb of ram, and maybe only a 200gb hard drive, but with all the software I will ever need. Also, at least a 19" monitor, and a quiet keyboard for typing late at night while my wife is sleeping. What's it going to cost? New computer, help me decide! 183542

This is what I priced out.........seems a little high to me, but I guess I'm used to pricing Dells and the like.

Dude, nothing came through....

Copy and paste the specs you're looking at....

Especially if you're looking at upping the RAM from stock, you'll want to go with someone other than ordering from Apple direct... they're RAM is waay expensive...

Cool, I'm not looking to buy one real soon, but I would like to know what I'm up against when I do. Maybe late this year or the beginning of next. It's just real hard to justify that price, when I can buy three new Dells for that and can outfit both my boys rooms with one of their own.....I'm torn, I know they are good, but man you sure pay for it! affraid

$1778 from CDW. (Buy as a business and CDW offers an additional 5-10% discount, as does ordering from Apple.)

This also includes iWork which has spreadsheet, presentation and word processing software for $79 (compare to $350 for MS Office)

Plus these come with all the Photo management, Movie Management and DVD Authoring software you'd need.

I know it SEEMS expensive, buy they're not, not really.

This Mac will not be outdated in 6 months like a Dell will, not to mention the cost of getting said Dell up to the same grade as this.

Basically, comparably equipped Dells cost the same as the similarly spec'd Macs. I have another option for you if you have a monitor, keyboard and mouse already that are USB.

Bottom line, do you want a 2008 Ferrari or a 2004 Chevy Cavalier?

you can't buy three dells similarly equipped along with software for that I don't believe.

I am shopping right for a computer, laptop, and by the time I add all the software costs the dell and the Mac Pro are very close.

Watch this website DAILY for great deals on hot buys. I usually check it out every day, and they have some smokin deals. Most of the software I run is picked up for "free" here and there! Surprised

Well, this will eventually be a "business" computer for me at the house. So yes, it will be a write off, but at the time I do it, I might buy a macbookPRO as well. It might be a twofer!!!

Noel, we can talk about this offline if you want later.....

Also, I have another option for you.

Closeout 24" with Core 2 Duo 2.16, 250 GB hard drive and 1 GB of RAM for $1399.... this is not the Aluminum enclosure, but still pretty sweet, plus a MONSTROUS screen. I have a 24 incher here at work and it is gorgeous. Figure another $30 for the RAM upgrade to 2 GB, $80 for iWork (unless I just happen to bring my copy with me when I visit) and $160 for the 3 years of AppleCare....

The MBP is a great machine as well. Just think about what you need to use it for, and whether the added cost compared to a MB is worth it. As I said, we can talk offline about this. I want to know specifically what you are looking for so you're not overbuying.

OK, gotta run files to the printer... be back shortly...

OK cool. I just want to upgrade our home computer, but will also want one for my shop in the house, to go wireless and to take with me on trips and whatnot. I'm just doing my research now, so I know what I'll be getting into down the road.

You're right though, I don't want to OVER buy what I really need.
