Should I shoot one?
Would this be wrong??
So I was thinking the other day. (scary)
If I'm going to take a 30.06 out to NM I need to practice a LOT. Yes?
I
Well every morning there are 6 or 8 deer behind the log yard about 350 400 yards and I thought about shooting one of them. I would of course eat the meat and all that.
I dont have access to a range longer than maybe 150 yards and I really need that experience shooting that far. its the perfect set-up too.
SO what do you guys think should I cap one?

UMMM, That would be out of season here in Ohio, so if you decide to, I wouldn't be tellin' anyone. I could care less if you do or not, but I wouldn't this time of year.

Re: Would this be wrong??
You shooting them in season? I mean, you're not poaching or anything, right? That would be the main concern, I guess.
Other than that, if you've never shot that far, you'd be surprised how difficult it is. I set up a can in a field about that far away to practice a shot that I might have at a feeder almost 400 yards away. It was tough, but I was glad I shot at the can first to get an idea of what I was in for. Never had the chance at the deer after, but I was ready all the same.
Bottom line is....I wouldn't say it's wrong....but I would recommend trying it out on paper first.

Oh, I won't pretend that I've never done anything similar. Sometimes the only chance a fella will have at some giant Canadas is in the Spring. The warden don't need to know about it.
I won't encourage you to do it, but I won't stop you either. And I won't tell you that I voted yes.....cause you already know that I did.

Am I the only one here with enough balls to say you shouldn't poach?
Practice on something legal, like paper targets.
I'm not a goody two shoes but shooting deer out of season with a rifle is not something I'm a fan of, I would say you shouldn't do it.

Never looked through a set. I just looked at the reviews and decided to try a set....I love em.
Yes they are plenty bright...and 8X42 is plenty glass for Ohio brush.

Re: Would this be wrong??
my 30.06 drops a lot at 400 yds. I think without looking it up about 24 inches. The longest range I have is 300 to practice on.
I am thinking of getting either a 7 mm or 300mag. any opinions out there?

Yep, a 300WSM would prolly be what I would get. I'm no ballistics expert, but it seems to be a good "all-purpose" gun with some serious knock down power.

Like I said, I don't just make a conscious decision to go poach, but I have shot a duck or two out of season by accident. Dang wood ducks look like teal in their early plumage. Do I advocate poaching? NO Have I done it? Yes
Kind of like the difference of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter I guess.

Re: Would this be wrong??
If you hunt long enough accidents will happen. Pheasants fly into the setting sun and hens sometimes die. but to just go out and shot a deer out of season without a need to eat I would not do it.
